Classic Beam Stress Analysis Using Maplesoft Mathematics Software
.
The I-Beam stress analysis shown below is used to calculate the maximum allowable load that can be supported by two 6 x 4
x .29/.19 I-Beams made from 6061-T6 aluminum . The maximum allowable working stress is the minimum yield stress of 6061-T6
aluminum divided by a factor of safety of 3 (MH 27th ed. pg. 208). The I-Beam's loading is shown under BEAM LOADING SKETCH.
When the I-Beams are subjected to the maximum allowable load (4P) of 5638 lbs, the resulting maximum I-Beam bending stress
is 13 ksi. This maximum allowable bending stress results in a safety factor in loading of 1.0 based on the maximum allowable
working stress described above. The I-Beam's deflection is shown to be 1.20 in. MapleSoft Mathematics Software was used to
solve the equations in this stress analysis.
