Classic Beam Stress Analysis Example
.
The I-Beam stress analysis shown below is used to calculate the maximum allowable load that can be supported by two (2) 6 x 4
x .29/.19 I-Beams made from 6061-T6 aluminum . The maximum allowable working stress is the minimum yield stress of 6061-T6
aluminum divided by a factor of safety of 3. A Machinery’s Handbook reference for this factor of safety is shown below in the
calculations. The I-Beam's loading is shown under BEAM LOADING SKETCH. When the I-Beams are subjected to the maximum
allowable load (4P) of 5638 lbs, the resulting maximum I-Beam bending stress is 13 ksi. This stress also takes the I-Beam's weight
into account. This maximum bending stress creates a safety factor in loading of 1.0 based on the maximum allowable working
stress described above. The I-Beam's deflection is shown to be 1.20 in. MapleSoft was used to create this stress analysis.
